Giovanni Battista Cirri, a virtuoso cellist, traveled to Paris in 1760, where some of his music was performed as part of the Concert Spirituel series.
Composition History
The sonatas on this album were composed after Cirri's return to Italy, reflecting influences from his travels and contact with other European musicians.
Recording & Production
This debut album, titled 'Cirri Project', is based on research by musicologist Simone Laghi, who unearthed the 12 Chamber Sonatas for cello and basso continuo in 2018.
Compositional Technique
Cirri's Duos for two cellos, also featured on this album, are theatrical, with both instruments sharing solo roles equally, and were designed for pedagogical use by teacher and pupil.
Performer Biography
