Dankerts: Missa de Beata Virgine
Did you know?
1/7Compositional Technique
Danckerts' Alleluia is unique because it is a written example of improvisation upon a cantus firmus, with no other similar examples except for Francesco de Layolle's counterpoints from 1529.
Notable Performances
The first modern performance of Ghiselin Danckerts' Missa de Beata Virgine took place in 2009 at the Cantar Lontano Festival in Italy.
Recording & Production
Every single note on this CD was written by Ghiselin Danckerts, including the Gregorian intonations, and no variations were added to the written text.
Interpretation
For this recording, the performers decided to perform the first and last Kyrie with a choir (more singers per part), while the Christe used only five singers (one per part) for intimacy.
Compositional Technique
In his Missa de Beata Virgine, Ghiselin Danckerts wrote down improvisational elements, known as contrappunto alla mente, which other composers typically did not.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Ghiselin Danckerts, the composer, was a man of tradition with extensive knowledge, and perhaps feared the future developments in music.
Recording & Production
This CD recording was produced by 'E Lucevan le Stelle' Records (Pesaro, Italy) with financial support from Region Le Marche, the Province of Ancona, and the City of Pesaro.
