Composition History

Glaube, Hoffnung und Liebe D 954 was Schubert's last multi-part vocal work, conceived as a processional song for a bell consecration in September 1828, just three months before his death.

Composition History

Schubert's Salve Regina D 811 for four male voices was a commissioned work in April 1824 for the installation of a new pastor near Vienna, at a time when he was not writing other church compositions.

Composer Biography

Johann Baptist Mayrhofer, another close friend of Schubert, shared a flat with him for nearly four years, during which most of Schubert's 47 songs to Mayrhofer's poems were composed.

Historical Context

During Schubert's lifetime, the guitar was a common accompanying instrument, as the piano was only gradually becoming established in households.
