The city of Dresden, known as the "Florence on the Elbe" due to its rich culture, was heavily bombarded by Prussian King Frederick II in 1760, leading to the loss of invaluable cultural treasures, including the court music archive.
Interpretation
The performers on this album use a viola da spalla, a small cello widely known in the 18th century but seldom heard today, which is held on the chest by a strap.
Composition History
The "Schranck II" collection, containing these works, was rediscovered in the 19th century and transferred to the king's private collection, now housed in the Saxon State and University Library in Dresden.

Ludger Rémy, the harpsichordist and conductor, was awarded the Fasch Prize in 2015 for his significant contributions to popularizing and researching the life and works of composer Johann Friedrich Fasch.
