The recording philosophy of the label, kuk-art.com, is to capture the intimate dialogue between artists, audience, work, and space by directly recording concerts in stereo-digital.
Historical Context
The Rastatt Favorite Palace, where this concert was recorded, is Germany's oldest and only nearly unchanged 'porcelain palace', built for Margravine Sibylla Augusta of Baden-Baden.
Composer Biography
Christoph Graupner, the composer, was a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Philipp Telemann, and George Frideric Handel.
Composer Biography
Christoph Graupner spent nearly half a century as Hofkapellmeister (court chapel master) at the court in Hesse-Darmstadt, where he composed music until he became blind in 1754.
Compositional Technique
The 'galant style' in music, fashionable from the 1720s to 1770s, featured simpler, more song-like melodies, reduced polyphony, and a clear distinction between soloist and accompaniment.
Composer Biography
Graupner studied law at the University of Leipzig, a common practice for composers of his era, before completing his musical studies with Johann Kuhnau, the cantor of the Thomasschule.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded live in the 'Sala Terrena' (Garden Hall) of the Rastatt Favorite Palace in Germany, a highly unusual ballroom that extends through all floors of the building.
