Christoph Graupner, though little-known today, was a highly regarded composer in his time and was even considered for the Thomaskantor position in Leipzig, which ultimately went to Johann Sebastian Bach.

Graupner's compositional output was astonishingly large, including over 1400 cantatas, 113 symphonies, 50 concertos, and numerous chamber works.

The sonatas on this album, GWV 708-711, were composed between 1740 and 1744, exploring the new and popular form of the obbligato sonata.
