In his Overture Suite in E minor, Christoph Graupner uses two 'oboi da selva' (curved tenor oboes, also known as oboi da caccia) to create a gallant, almost 'symphonic' sound, treating them like woodwind equivalents to fashionable 'forest horns'.

The texts for the cantatas on this album were provided by Georg Christian Lehms, who was appointed court librarian in Darmstadt in 1710 and also worked as a librettist for Graupner's school friend Johann David Heinichen.

Christoph Graupner, the composer, was discovered by Landgraf Ernst Ludwig of Hesse-Darmstadt as a harpsichordist at the Hamburg Opera in 1709 and hired on the spot.

Christoph Graupner was offered the position of Thomaskantor in Leipzig in 1723, but his princely employer denied him leave, leading to Johann Sebastian Bach getting the position instead.

The Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt disregarded the general ban on church music for women, recruiting two outstanding female singers from the Hamburg Opera in 1709.
Composition History
Christoph Graupner, the composer, delivered over 1,400 compositions from 1709 until shortly before his blindness in 1754, most of which are now stored at the Hessian State and University Library in Darmstadt.
Performer Biography
Florian Deuter, one of the musical directors and solo violinists for Harmonie Universelle, began his career in 1987 with Reinhard Goebel's Musica Antiqua Köln and became its concertmaster from 1994 to 2000.
