Johann Adolph Hasse and his wife, Faustina Bordoni (one of the most famous singers of the 18th century), were considered the most influential musical couple of their era.
Instruments
Federico Toffano, the cellist, plays a cello made by Carlo Antonio Testore in 1727, which is lent by the Jumpstart Jr. Foundation.
Composer Biography
Johann Adolph Hasse, the composer, was born in Bergedorf (now part of Hamburg) and worked as an opera composer in Naples, Venice, and Dresden.
Composer's Artistic Vision
The British music historian Charles Burney described the collaboration between poet Pietro Metastasio and composer Johann Adolph Hasse as two halves forming a whole, both possessing the same genius, taste, and judgment.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded in April 2016 at the Miry Concert Hall of the Royal Conservatory in Ghent, Belgium.
Composition History
Chamber cantatas, like those on this album, were often considered the opposite of opera, serving as intimate pieces for virtuoso performers in private aristocratic homes.
