The Fitzwilliam String Quartet became well known through their close association with Dmitri Shostakovich, who entrusted them with the Western premières of his last three quartets.
Instruments
The Fitzwilliam String Quartet is one of the few string quartets in Britain that uses Classical instruments for appropriate repertoire, and performs on both historical and modern set-ups.
Recording & Production
The recording took place in Glasserton Church, South West Scotland, at a time when the local community was mourning a trawler disaster, which added a unique atmosphere to the performance.
Interpretation
The performers occasionally made adjustments to the part-writing to align with Haydn's customary scrupulousness and studied other versions, especially the oratorio, for phrasing and articulation.
Recording & Production
This recording was made possible by a bequest from the late Barbara Gomperts, with royalties from sales going to Jessie's Fund, a charity supporting music therapy for sick children.
