1/7Historical Context
Paul Hindemith emigrated to America in 1940 to escape persecution by the Nazi regime.
Performer Biography
The Berlin Philharmonic Wind Quintet, founded in 1988, is the first permanently established wind quintet in the Berlin Philharmonic's rich tradition of chamber music.
Composition History
Hindemith wrote the first four movements of his Wind Septet in Taormina, Sicily, between November 21 and December 1, 1948, in a beautiful garden overlooking Mount Etna.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Hans Werner Henze's 'l'autunno' is program music whose sign language and gestures recall old traditions of contrapuntal music, and its subject, autumn, comes entirely from the imaginative world of Georg Trakl's poetry.
Composer Biography
Paul Hindemith, one of the composers on this album, was born 100 years before this recording was made, and Hans Werner Henze, the other composer, celebrated his 70th birthday in 1996.
Compositional Technique
Hindemith's Septet for Wind Instruments features a triple fugue in its last movement, where three themes are developed separately and then combined, all overshadowed by a cantus firmus in the trumpet playing an old Bernese march.
Instruments
A striking feature of Hans Werner Henze's 'l'autunno' is its rich instrumentation, requiring each player to perform on almost all related instruments in their main instrument's family.
