1/7Recording & Production
During the recording session, the team decided to always have someone in the room for Diamanda La Berge Dramm to play to, as she feels she needs an audience to make the music happen.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Diamanda La Berge Dramm, the violinist on this album, sees a connection between Bach and Cage in how they both make music 'dance' even though it isn't strictly dance music.
Compositional Technique
For John Cage's Cheap Imitation for solo violin, Cage worked with violinist Paul Zukofsky to explore the instrument's tonal possibilities, incorporating chance elements and specific instructions like no vibrato and microtonal inflections.
Instruments
Diamanda La Berge Dramm performs on an Andranik Gaybaryan violin made in 2014, using an Andreas Grütter bow from 2015.
Performer Biography
Diamanda La Berge Dramm, the violinist, was the first string soloist to win the Dutch Classical Talent Tour & Award in April 2018.
Composition History
John Cage's Cheap Imitation was created after Satie's publishers refused rights for his Socrate, on which the choreography by Merce Cunningham was based, forcing Cage to write a new piece with the same structure.
Interpretation
The album's concept, as described by violinist Diamanda La Berge Dramm, is that the violin acts as a chamber containing the voice, which sometimes emerges and then folds back in.
