Ivo Malec's "Epistola" was inspired by a 1522 letter from Marko Marulic, an eminent Croatian poet, writer, and humanist, to Pope Adrian VI, begging for help against a Turkish invasion.

Emmanuel Krivine, the conductor, began his career as a violinist, winning First Prize at the Paris Conservatoire.

The cantata "Epistola" was commissioned by "Luxembourg and Great Region, the 2007 European Capital of Culture" and premiered in December 2006.
