Spartacus was not a commissioned piece; Jan Van der Roost composed it "for myself" to add a work for wind orchestra to his diploma portfolio at the Antwerp Conservatoire.

Jan Van der Roost, the composer, dedicated his symphonic tone poem Spartacus to Ottorino Respighi, an Italian master of orchestration, due to his imaginative and colourful music.

Poème Montagnard incorporates the musical notes B-A-C-H-D, derived from the conductor Lino Blanchod's name, as a recurring musical thread throughout the piece.
