Jean-Baptiste Dupont: Improvisations
Did you know?
1/7Recording & Production
For this recording, Jean-Baptiste Dupont selected the improvisations he deemed worthy of being preserved, much like an interpreter choosing the best takes for a repertoire recording.
Interpretation
The album features spontaneous improvisations, drawing from Jean-Baptiste Dupont's musical universe and the emotions of the moment, rather than pastiches of older composers.
Recording & Production
Recording improvisations is considered incongruous because the discipline is defined by its impromptu and ephemeral nature, yet this disc leaves a lasting trace.
Performer Biography
Jean-Baptiste Dupont won first prize in the St. Albans international improvisation competition in 2009, and this recording celebrates the tenth anniversary of that success.
Instruments
Despite its 64 registers, the magnificent organ of St. Albans Cathedral offered Jean-Baptiste Dupont a rich palette of sounds and great flexibility, allowing for free improvisation.
Performer Biography
Jean-Baptiste Dupont, the organist on this album, began his musical journey by improvising as an autodidact even before learning piano.
Instruments
The organ of St. Albans Cathedral, built in 1962 by Harrison & Harrison, was the first English cathedral organ to follow the neoclassical aesthetic of the Royal Festival Hall organ.
