Composer Biography

Jouni Kaipainen, the composer, received conflicting yet fruitful musical precepts from his teachers Aulis Sallinen and Paavo Heininen, shaping his professional and modern outlook alongside a dramatic and pluralistic approach.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Kaipainen's initial inspiration to become a composer came from hearing Beethoven's Eroica Symphony when he was still at school.

Compositional Technique

Kaipainen's Third Symphony incorporates allusions to other composers, including Mahlerian shifts, Skryabin-like ecstasy, and Beethoven's influence, all deeply integrated into its structure.

Performer Biography

Otto Virtanen, the bassoonist on this album, began his music studies on piano at age six and has been the 1st principal bassoonist with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra since autumn 2004.

Composition History

In the early 1980s, when the symphony genre was considered in decline, Kaipainen approached the idea of a symphony through its content rather than its title.
