The Dmitri Ensemble, formed in 2004, is a performing group committed to presenting both neglected and new works, and this recording is their début disc.

Composition History

The work "Seven Last Words from the Cross" was commissioned by BBC Television and first screened in seven nightly episodes during Holy Week 1994.

Compositional Technique

The motet "…here in hiding…" combines the Latin original of a Gregorian hymn by St Thomas Aquinas with its English translation by Gerard Manley Hopkins.

The traditional text for "Seven Last Words from the Cross" is a compilation from all four gospels, forming a sequential presentation of Christ's last seven sentences.

"Nemo te condemnavit" is a short Communion motet written for the Yale Glee Club in 2005, and its performance on this disc is a world première recording.
