Composer Biography

The English composer Arthur Bliss visited Malipiero in the late 1920s and found his house full of various animals, including two aged scops owls in the kitchen.

Compositional Technique

Malipiero rejected Austro-German-style 'thematic development' in favor of an Italian symphonic ideal where "varied sections follow one another unpredictably, obeying only those mysterious laws that instinct recognises."

Performer Biography

Francesco La Vecchia, the conductor, gave his first concert at age nine and founded the Accademia Internazionale di Musica Arts Academy of Rome at 23.

The Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma is undertaking a series of recordings for Naxos featuring important compositions by Italian composers of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Composition History

Malipiero stated that the second set of his Impressioni dal vero was influenced by the "horrible summer of 1915" when he witnessed air-raids on Venice.

Gian Francesco Malipiero, the composer, was the most prolific of the Italian '1880 Generation' composers, with over 200 works including nearly 40 operas and seventeen symphonies.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Malipiero's close friend, writer Massimo Bontempelli, described the composer's entire output as "a single vast uninterrupted work, a continuous musical discourse without repetition."
