Composer Biography
Bohuslav Martinu, the composer, was born in a church tower in Polička, a small Bohemian town in what is now the Czech Republic.
Historical Context
Martinu moved to the United States in the early 1940s to escape the spreading Nazi occupation of Europe.
Composition History
Martinu completed his Piano Concerto No. 3 on the same day as the tragic death of Czechoslovak foreign minister Jan Masaryk in 1948, leading him to abandon plans to return home.

Martinu was a prolific composer, with over four hundred pieces of music to his credit, and began composing at the age of ten.

Giorgio Koukl is considered one of the world's leading interpreters of Martinu's piano music, having developed it into an important part of his concert repertoire.

Giorgio Koukl, the pianist on this recording, was born in Prague and moved to Switzerland in 1968, the same year Soviet tanks rolled into Prague.
