1/7Composition History
Mendelssohn's Opus 13, written when he was eighteen, was influenced by Beethoven's recently published Opus 132, with Mendelssohn copying themes and even the use of recitative.
Instruments
Tanja Tetzlaff, the cellist of the Tetzlaff Quartett, plays a violoncello made in 1776 by Giovanni Baptista Guadagnini.
Performer Biography
The Tetzlaff Quartett, formed in 1994 by Christian and Tanja Tetzlaff, Hanna Weinmeister, and Elisabeth Kufferath, is a highly sought-after string quartet despite its members working together only sporadically.
Compositional Technique
At the end of the Lyric Suite, Alban Berg quotes Zemlinsky's Lyric Symphony and references Charles Baudelaire's De profundis, leading to a very gloomy musical atmosphere.
Compositional Technique
In the Lyric Suite, Alban Berg used two successive C's in the score to refer to Hanna Fuchs-Robbetin's daughter, 'Dodo', as 'do' is the Italian solmization syllable for 'C'.
Interpretation
The Tetzlaff Quartett chose the Mendelssohn and Berg works because they challenge them as musicians and both pieces are connected to hidden love stories.
Composition History
Alban Berg encrypted the meaning of the individual sections and passages of his Lyric Suite in the score he gave to his great love, Hanna Fuchs-Robbetin, but did not reveal this publically.
