Members of the Bartholdy Quintett, Ulf Schneider (violin) and Volker Jacobsen (viola), knew each other from childhood, having competed in recorder duels as teenagers.
Interpretation
The Bartholdy Quintett chose to record Mendelssohn's original autograph versions of the quintets, avoiding later cuts, but also included an alternative fourth movement for Op. 87.
Composition History
The Minuetto, included as a bonus track, was originally intended for the A-Major Quintet but was replaced by a new Intermezzo Mendelssohn composed after the death of his violin teacher and friend, Eduard Rietz.
