Composition History
Schubert's Octet was allegedly commissioned by Ferdinand Graf Troyer, an amateur clarinettist, who wanted a work similar to Beethoven's Septet.

Schubert viewed his Octet, along with his string quartets Rosamunde and Death and the Maiden, as studies to pave the way for his 'great symphony'.

Performer Biography
The Dresden Octet was founded in 2015 by eight section leaders of the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, an orchestra with a long tradition of chamber music.

Schubert's Octet expands on Beethoven's Septet by adding a second violin, emphasizing its symphonic character, and giving equal importance to all eight instruments.
Interpretation
The Dresden Octet's double-bassist, Andreas Wylezol, notes that playing in the octet allows for more intense and spontaneous interaction than in a full orchestra.
Composer Biography
The Octet may reflect Schubert's personal despair in 1824, as he was terminally ill and confided to his friend Leopold Kupelwieser about his unhappiness.
