Bramwell Tovey, the conductor on this album, is a versatile musician known for his expertise in operatic, choral, British, and contemporary repertoire, and his recent recording with violinist James Ehnes earned a 2007 Grammy Award.

Kenneth Hesketh's The Alchymist's Journal is an abstract musical drama where each of its nine sections is based on the same six-note 'cell', from which themes and tonal centers are drawn, creating an organic flow.

The 'Variations on a Theme of Tippett' is a unique piece conceived for the Foden's Richardson Band to celebrate the centenary of Sir Michael Tippett's birth in 2005, featuring contributions from five leading contemporary brass band composers.

Sir Richard Rodney Bennett's Flowers of the Forest, his only contribution to the brass band repertoire, was commissioned by the BBC for the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain to perform at a Promenade Concert in 1989.

This album features new music for brass band, with several works commissioned or edited by Paul Hindmarsh, the producer of this recording, for events like the BBC Festival of Brass and the RNCM Festival of Brass.
