Performer Biography

David Johnson, the pianist, graduated with distinction from the Royal Academy of Music in London and has been the chief répétiteur and principal pianist at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin since 1980.

Compositional Technique

Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda, a Bohemian composer and contemporary of Schumann, wrote his "Morceau de Salon" (Op. 228) not for middle-class salons but to showcase the oboe's capabilities in domestic music-making.

Compositional Technique

Antonio Pasculli, known as the "Paganini of the oboe" around 1860, pushed the instrument's technical boundaries, creating 'crazily virtuosic figurations' that remain among the most difficult ever written.

This album was recorded at the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Berlin Dahlem from February 6-8, 2008.

Katsuya Watanabe, the oboist on this album, began learning piano at age three and oboe at thirteen, later studying at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music.
