Composer Biography

Sergey Prokofiev, born in 1891 in the Russian Empire (modern-day Ukraine), was a prolific composer who wrote hundreds of works in almost every genre.

Historical Context

Both sonatas on this album, Prokofiev's Flute Sonata in D Major, Op. 94, and Violin Sonata No. 1 in F Minor, Op. 80, were written during the Second World War and reflect that period.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Sergey Prokofiev, the composer, stated that the main virtue of his life was the search for originality and his own musical language, expressing a dislike for imitation and hackneyed methods.

Instruments

Flutist Ariane Brisson performs on a 10-karat Powell flute, generously loaned by patron Roger Dubois, owner of the Canimex Group.
