Maurice Ravel, the composer, made five attempts to win the prestigious Prix de Rome, a competition he was temperamentally unlikely to succeed in due to its strict adherence to compositional rules.

Critical Reception

Ravel's repeated rejection from the Prix de Rome became a public scandal, known as 'L'affaire Ravel', which led to the resignation of the Conservatoire's director, Théodore Dubois.
