The Sauer organ in St. Peter's Cathedral in Bremen, featured on CD 1, is one of three major instruments by organ builder Wilhelm Sauer in Germany.

Composition History

Max Reger's Twelve Pieces op. 59 were composed in the summer of 1901 at the suggestion of Henri Hinrichsen, who headed the C. F. Peters publishing house.

Instruments

The Sauer organ in the Bad Salzungen Town Church, featured on CD 2, is one of the few unchanged organs known to have been played and inspected by Max Reger himself.

Performer Biography

Gerhard Weinberger's complete recording of Bach's organ works on cpo received the German Record Critics Prize in 2009.

Compositional Technique

Reger's Chorale Fantasias op. 52, composed in a few weeks in 1900, adhere to the principle of 'per aspera ad astra' (through hardships to the stars), with this idea realized in each piece and across the entire cycle.

Compositional Technique

The Introduction and Passacaglia in D minor, a commissioned work, was considered by Reger to be easily sight-readable by any somewhat accomplished organist, though this was likely an underestimation.
