Poul Rovsing Olsen was an internationally recognized ethnomusicologist who conducted research trips to the Persian Gulf, India, Greenland, and Egypt, studying local music and song traditions.
Composer Biography
Poul Rovsing Olsen studied piano and music theory at the Royal Danish Academy of Music and law at Copenhagen University, before continuing his musical training in Paris with Nadia Boulanger and Olivier Messiaen.

Poul Rovsing Olsen believed that "to write music for a poem is to mix blood with a poet."

Almost all the songs on this album are world premiere recordings, with the exception of the Two Lagerkvist Songs, Op. 15.
Composer Biography
Poul Rovsing Olsen, the composer, came from a musical family; his mother was a pupil of the famous tenor Lauritz Melchior, and his father played cello and piano.

Performer Biography
Ulla Miilmann, the flutist on this album, is the Principal Flutist of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and was the first Danish soloist to receive an American Grammy nomination.
