Composer Biography
Paolo Aretino (Paolo Antonio Del Bivi) was a prolific composer who spent his entire musical career in his native town of Arezzo, Italy.

Aretino's Lamentations and responsories use specific vocal ranges that alternate in blocks for each liturgical day to create contrast and concord.
Compositional Technique
A common feature in Aretino's lessons and responsories is an essentially homorhythmic style, based on repeated breves and semibreves, ensuring the text is always clearly rendered.

The works on this recording are drawn from Paolo Aretino's Piae ac devotissime lamentationes of 1546, one of three collections he dedicated to Holy Week.
Composer Biography
Paolo Aretino's reputation extended beyond Arezzo, as he was referred to as a 'new Orpheus' and praised as the 'other' jewel of Arezzo in a 1550 letter published in Venice.
