Compositional Technique

Salviucci's Chamber Symphony for 17 Instruments and Serenade for 9 Instruments use ensembles larger than conventional chamber groups but smaller than an orchestra, allowing him to explore both polyphony and melody.

Giovanni Salviucci was considered one of Italy's most talented composers in the interwar period, alongside Luigi Dallapiccola and Goffredo Petrassi.

Salviucci's daughter, Giovanna, is now a famous Italian folksinger and composer, and her support was instrumental in making this recording possible.

Recording & Production

This album features all of Salviucci's published chamber works from 1930 onwards, plus an unpublished String Quartet, many of which are world premiere recordings.

Composer Biography

Salviucci died from tuberculous meningitis in 1937, shortly before his 30th birthday, which prevented him from gaining the recognition of his peers.

Composition History

Salviucci's last two compositions, Alcesti and the Serenade for 9 Instruments, were considered his masterpieces by critics but he died before hearing them performed.
