Julia Brown, the organist, was born in Rio de Janeiro and received a scholarship from the Brazilian Government to study organ at Northwestern University.

Composer Biography

Heinrich Scheidemann died in 1663 during a plague epidemic in Hamburg, and his widow received a pension from the city.

Composition History

Scheidemann's important Magnificat settings, featured on this album, were discovered in 1955 by Gustav Fock in a book of organ tablatures.

Compositional Technique

Scheidemann's Magnificat settings use echo effects by alternating between different manuals on the organ.

Heinrich Scheidemann, the composer, studied with Jan P. Sweelinck, an organist in Amsterdam, between 1611 and 1614.
