For this recording, the performers chose to return to Schumann's original version of Dichterliebe and added two Lieder, Widmung and Aus den hebräischen Gesängen, from his Op. 25 (Myrthen).

The cellist, Tatsuki Sasanuma, initially replaced vocal lines with cello interpretations using piano recordings by Ryo Yamanishi, a répétiteur at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg, and shared these on social media.

In June 1840, two months before his marriage was approved, Schumann attempted to publish a cycle of 20 Lieder dedicated to his friend Felix Mendelssohn, which later became Dichterliebe.
