Alexandre Tansman, a Polish-born composer, had an exceptionally far-ranging career in the 20th century, studying in Poland before settling in Paris.
Composer Biography
During a 1927-28 tour of the United States, Tansman performed his Second Piano Concerto, a work dedicated to Charlie Chaplin, who was present at the concert.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Tansman favored the clarinet among wind instruments, finding it offered the widest range of expressive possibilities, from lyrical romanticism to jazz and folk music.

Tansman met Mahatma Gandhi during a world tour in 1932-33 and later heard his Four Polish Dances programmed by Toscanini with the New York Philharmonic.
