Composition History

Albinoni's Opus 4 is considered a forgery, similar to Vivaldi's Il pastor fido, as publishers often used unauthorized manuscripts and added other works to create collections under famous names for profit.

Compositional Technique

Vivaldi was ahead of his time in formal structure, using a three-movement slow-fast-fast scheme in half of his Opus 2 sonatas, a design that only became fully established around 1740 in the German galant style.

Instruments

The harpsichord used on this recording was made by Gian Franco Facchini in Ravenna in 1995, modeled after an 18th-century Italian instrument.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Vivaldi's Opus 2, his only printed collection purely dedicated to solo sonatas, shows the influence of the Roman virtuoso Arcangelo Corelli, whose Opus 5 overshadowed much of the sonata production of the time.
