Weinberg's Symphony No. 13, completed in 1976 after a thirteen-year break, was a tribute to his friend and mentor Dmitri Shostakovich, who died in 1975.

Mieczysław Weinberg, a Polish Jewish composer, emigrated to Tashkent via Byelorussia before settling in Moscow in 1943 with the support of Dmitri Shostakovich.

Weinberg was arrested in the 1950s under suspicion of involvement in an alleged KGB conspiracy, due to his family ties with Solomon Michoels, who was murdered on Stalin's orders.

Composition History

Weinberg's Sonata for Clarinet and Piano op. 28 and Twelve Miniatures op. 29 were composed in 1945, a period influenced by his first meeting with Dmitri Shostakovich.
