1/7Composition History
The Trio Sonata BWV 1038, though an autograph by J.S. Bach exists, was published under Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's name in the 20th century, theorized as a compositional exercise for his son.
Album & Artwork
The album title, "BWV… or not? The inauthentic Bach," refers to the many works once attributed to J.S. Bach that are now considered of doubtful or different authorship.
Historical Context
In the Baroque era, concepts like 'author's rights' or 'intellectual property' held little weight, and composers often copied or arranged works by colleagues without attribution.
Composer Biography
Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, for whom the famous 'Goldberg Variations' are said to have been composed, studied with J.S. Bach in Leipzig from the age of ten.
Composition History
J.S. Bach's 'Musical Offering' (BWV 1079) was created after King Frederick II of Prussia challenged Bach to improvise on a theme he provided during a visit in 1747.
Interpretation
For the Suite BWV 1025, the performers chose to use a German Baroque lute for the continuo to recreate the atmosphere of a musical evening between Weiss and J.S. Bach.
Composition History
The Suite in A major BWV 1025 is an arrangement by J.S. Bach for violin and harpsichord of a lute suite by Sylvius Leopold Weiss, a famous lutenist at the Dresden court.
