Composition History
Arcangelo Corelli's Op. V, a volume of sonatas for solo instrument, was published in 1700, following his earlier trio sonata collections.
Recording & Production
This recording is the result of a partnership between Outhere Music and the MA Competition Bruges, Belgium, which Teodoro Baù won in 2021.
Interpretation
The performer, Teodoro Baù, sometimes reads directly from the original Corelli edition, playing an octave lower and adapting the music to fit the viola da gamba.
Critical Reception
Corelli's Op. V was so popular that there were over forty clandestine re-editions during the 18th century, not counting handwritten copies, due to the absence of copyright.
Performer Biography
Teodoro Baù, the viola da gamba player on this album, was the winner of the MA Competition in Brugge in 2021.
Cultural Impact
Corelli's Op. V sonatas were a fundamental part of basic violin tuition in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, appearing prominently in anthologies of 'old masters'.
