Jan Ladislav Dussek (1760-1812) was considered one of the leading keyboard performers and composers of his era by his contemporaries.

Composer Biography

Dussek led a restless life, traveling from rural Bohemia to major cultural centers like Paris, Riga, St. Petersburg, and London, where he achieved fame as a virtuoso.

Instruments

Dussek's collaboration with piano builder John Broadwood led to the development of fortepianos with an extended keyboard range, first five and a half, then six octaves.

Composer's Artistic Vision

The characteristic sound and touch of the English fortepiano inspired and shaped the development of Dussek's compositional style.

Performer Biography

Piet Kuijken is a professor of piano and fortepiano at the Royal Conservatoire in Brussels and a guest professor at the Royal Conservatoire in Antwerp.

Interpretation

Piet Kuijken, the performer, chose to record these sonatas on an original Longman and Clementi pianoforte from 1798, believing it perfectly reveals their charm and innovative writing.

This album is the second part of a comprehensive recording project featuring eight fortepianists, aiming to record all of Dussek's piano sonatas on period instruments.
