Composition History

Shostakovich composed his Cello Sonata in 1934, shortly after the premiere of his opera The Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, while staying in a friend's empty Leningrad flat after an argument with his wife.

Cultural Impact

The city of Lugano is developing a new cultural center, Lugano Arte e Cultura (LAC), which will include a museum and performing arts space, opening in 2013.

Performer Biography

Martha Argerich, the Argentine pianist and namesake of the Progetto Martha Argerich, has long abandoned solo performances in favor of collaborative chamber music.

Composition History

Ravel's 'Posthumous' Violin Sonata, an early work from 1897, was deemed unsuitable for publication by the composer and only appeared in print in 1975, the year of his centenary.

Recording & Production

This album is a three-disc compilation of highlights from sixteen concerts that took place during the 2013 Progetto Martha Argerich in Lugano.

Instruments

BSI Bank, a sponsor of the Lugano Festival, acquired the 1737 'Panette' violin by Guarneri 'del Gesù', formerly owned by Isaac Stern, for violinist Renaud Capuçon in 2005.
