Composition History
Garbis Aprikian composed the second movement of his Little Nuptial Suite, titled 'Kovk (Praises),' sixty years after his father hummed the melody to him, as a tacit encouragement to his musical calling.
Critical Reception
After a 1906 concert in Paris, Claude Debussy was so impressed by Komitas's genius that he knelt and kissed his hand, calling him 'holy father' and a 'revelation.'
Composer's Artistic Vision
Komitas, an Armenian composer, aimed to 'bring out of the ruins of our native land the treasures of our folk music,' viewing himself as rediscovering and recreating the voice of Armenia.
