Performer Biography

David Shifrin, described as 'one of the world's great clarinetists' by the Los Angeles Times, received Stereo Review's 'Record of the Year' award for this recording.

Composition History

Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, K. 622, was his last major work, based on earlier sketches for a basset horn concerto and written while he was aware of his final illness.

Interpretation

This recording features David Shifrin playing Mozart's original versions of the Clarinet Concerto and Quintet on an extended-range clarinet, built for him by Leonard Gullotta.

Composition History

The musical collaboration between Mozart and Anton Stadler, a clarinet virtuoso, began in 1784 and culminated in the Clarinet Quintet (1789) and the Clarinet Concerto (1791).

Instruments

Mozart composed both the Clarinet Concerto and Quintet for an unusual extended-range clarinet, which included four notes lower than the standard instrument of his time.
