With the exception of one work, all of Rachmaninov's chamber music on this album comes from the earliest part of his career, composed before he was twenty-one.

The original version of Rachmaninov's second Trio élégiaque uniquely required four instruments and four players, as it included a harmonium part that the pianist could not play simultaneously with the piano.

Rachmaninov's first Trio élégiaque was not published until 1947 and was often confused with his later Op. 9 Trio due to the shared title.

The Russian cellist Anatoly Brandukov, dedicatee of Tchaikovsky's Pezzo capriccioso, was a close musical associate of Rachmaninov and the dedicatee of his two published works for cello and piano.
