Robert Schumann's tenure as Director of the municipal choir and orchestra in Düsseldorf ended abruptly due to criticisms of his conducting and a falling out with the Musikverein, leading him to never conduct again.
Composition History
The Three Romances, Op 94, were originally composed for oboe and piano in December 1849, but Schumann also published them with an alternative violin part.
Compositional Technique
Schumann's late chamber works, including the violin sonatas on this album, explore cyclic form with subtle thematic recall, a technique he had previously used in his symphonies.

Schumann composed the Violin Sonata in A minor, Op 105, the Piano Trio in G minor, Op 110, and the D minor Violin Sonata, Op 121, in rapid succession between September and early November 1851.
Performer Biography
Anthony Marwood, the violinist on this album, is a member of the award-winning Florestan Trio and has collaborated with contemporary composers such as Thomas Adès and Sally Beamish.

Schumann completed his Violin Sonata in A minor, Op 105, in less than a week, between September 12 and 16, 1851, at a time when he was "very angry with certain people."
Performer Biography
Susan Tomes, the pianist on this album, is a founder member of the award-winning group Domus, which toured with its own portable concert hall, and later co-founded The Florestan Trio.
