About half of the anthems in Musica Deo Sacra are 'verse anthems' or 'songs to the organ', where solo voices alternate with the full choir, featuring prominent organ accompaniments.

The largest collection of Tomkins's church music is the posthumous collection Musica Deo Sacra, published by his son Nathaniel in 1668.
