Composer's Artistic Vision

Despite being a professed agnostic, Vaughan Williams edited "The English Hymnal" and composed two Masses, yet he detested ballet and insisted "Job" be titled a 'masque for dancing' rather than a ballet.

Composer Biography

Ralph Vaughan Williams, the composer, was a grandson of the great anthropologist Charles Darwin and a member of a widespread intellectual dynasty rooted in Cambridge University.

Recording & Production

The audio restoration for this album was done by Lani Spahr, who has received critical praise and was awarded an Honorary Membership of the Elgar Society for his work on Sir Edward Elgar's recorded legacy.

Composition History

Vaughan Williams's "Job: A Masque for Dancing" was commissioned on the suggestion of eminent surgeon and aesthete Geoffrey Keynes, brother of economist John Maynard Keynes.

Compositional Technique

"Job: A Masque for Dancing" includes an early use of the saxophone by Vaughan Williams, which he also used with "devilish intent" in his Symphony No. 6.

Performer Biography

Sir Adrian Boult, the conductor on this album, was a leading champion of English composers and gave the first performances of Vaughan Williams's "Pastoral," Fourth, and Sixth symphonies.
