Before 2019, only two works by Buffardin were known to have survived: a flute concerto in E minor and a trio sonata in A major.
Composer Biography
Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin, the composer, was born in Toulon in 1693 to an instrument maker father, from whom he likely learned to play and build flutes.
Instruments
A 1769 inventory of the Castle of Podhorce in Ukraine lists twenty flutes by various makers, including six by Buffardin, four of which were made of ivory.
Composer Biography
Buffardin was a flautist at the Dresden court, one of the best-paid musicians, earning 1000 thalers by 1741.
Instruments
Antoine Mahaut, a composer and flautist, attributed two inventions to Buffardin in his flute method: the flute's screwcap and the divided foot joint with tuning slide.

The flute used in this recording is a copy of a Buffardin model made by Giovanni Tardino.
Composer Biography
Buffardin taught flute to several notable pupils, including Johann Jacob Bach (uncle of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach) and Johann Joachim Quantz, a famous flautist and composer.
