Robert Schumann (a German composer and influential music critic) wrote unfavorably of Liszt's 1837 Grandes Etudes, suggesting Liszt's virtuosity as a performer hindered his development as a composer.
Composition History
Liszt's 12 Grandes Etudes (1837) were dedicated to Carl Czerny (an Austrian composer, teacher, and pianist), and the Italian edition also dedicated a part to Frédéric Chopin (a Polish composer and virtuoso pianist).
