Composition History

Roderick Williams's "Inviolata (after Lusitano)" was co-commissioned by The Marian Consort and Classical Remix in 2021, initially conceived as a multi-speaker sound installation.

This album features a triptych of "Inviolata" settings, marking the beginning of The Marian Consort's relationship with Linn Records.

Compositional Technique

Both Lusitano's and Josquin's "Inviolata" settings feature a structural device: a canon at the interval of a fifth based on the plainchant associated with the text.
